About Us

If you want it done right, you do it yourself.

Rich and Sandi built The Mellon Patch from the ground up more than 20 years ago. What started as a vision has become a way of life — one rooted in hard work, self-reliance, and a deep connection to the land.

We live and homestead in rural northwestern Alberta, Canada. Our homestead is a fully functioning, year-round operation guided by one simple belief.

A Practical Virtue

What some call waste, we call opportunity.

Take what we call "the beginning." When hatching eggs, only a small number of roosters are needed for the flock. The rest are raised, processed, and turned into ground chicken and rich bone broth — simple, nourishing food made with purpose.

We also make many of our own everyday products, including natural soaps, because self-sufficiency doesn't stop at the table — it's part of everything we do.

A Family Legacy

The next generation, growing on the same vine.

Our son Jake has built his own home on the home quarter with his wife Marisa and their children, Nathaniel and Raegan. Together, they've named their place "The Mellon Patch — The Vine," continuing the tradition and growing the next generation of homesteaders.

On Air

Our story, shared with viewers across the country.

The Mellon Patch Homesteading TV Series airs year-round on Wild TV, The Cowboy Channel, and RFD-TV in Canada.

This isn't a hobby. It's not a trend. It's our life.
